Providing what you need to create art, raise food, and forge your own path through the uncertainty of life — whether it be in the glinting light of the sun or under the shadow of the blood moon.
Just across the street from Penobscot bay, Gealach Fola Acres is comprised of 81 mostly wooded acres.
It was founded in 2022 to provide for our family, Searsport, and the surrounding communities. We believe people should have access to food, fiber and other products that have been produced locally — things made with a focus on organic practices, high animal welfare standards, and keeping environmental impacts low.
Our fiber program focuses on softness, durability, and sheen. In our first year of operation we raised a myriad of fiber animals, producing mohair, alpaca, satin angora, and more than 5 types of sheep’s wool. After extensively processing and testing the different protein fiber types, we have chosen to focus on mohair for the time being. We have also grown organic flax for linen for the past 2 years.
Creating a healthy ecosystem and using the synergy of nature is at the heart of everything we do here at the farm. Pests and diseases are mitigated through creating a healthy ecosystem focused on prevention, not through intensive chemical use. In lieu of chemical dewormers, pesticides and drugs, organic and natural alternatives are chosen whenever possible. We support other Maine businesses by purchasing locally produced hay and grain.
Our artisan goods are offered on a small-scale, limited edition or commission basis: all items are handmade, generally from materials produced or processed on the farm. As such, the carbon footprint of these items is minimal; no fossil fuels are burned for transport of raw materials. The very process of creating the raw material is an act of carbon sequestration for fiber goods, as the pasture on which fiber animals are raised acts as a huge carbon sink. Furthermore, all artisan goods are sold either from the farm itself or at venues located less than 10 miles from the farm – and all deliveries are made in an electric vehicle.
Food crops and bast fibers (specifically flax for linen) are produced on the farm at a relatively small-scale, with a focus on sustainable and organic methods. We will be pursuing organic certification in the future and have partnered with the USDA’s Natural Resource Conservation Service to ensure that our agricultural practices are aligned with environmental protection and and conservation practices.
Whether for food or fiber, animals are raised with emphasis on providing excellent quality of life. They all have names, access to outdoors (and adequate shelter) 24/7, are fed organically and get daily attention and socialization with us. We do occasionally do small farm tours, usually by appointment/request.
We’d love to meet you!
